AZS bricks

In many high-temperature industrial fields, AZS bricks have become an indispensable key material due to their unique properties. Whether in glass manufacturing, metallurgy, or ceramic production, AZS bricks play an important role.

Definition and composition of AZS bricks

AZS bricks, the full name of which is zirconium corundum bricks, are abbreviated as AZS in English. These three letters represent their main chemical components: Al₂O₃ (aluminum oxide), ZrO₂ (zirconium oxide), and SiO₂ (silicon dioxide). The order of arrangement depends on the content of the elements. Usually, the content of alumina is about 48%, the content of zirconium oxide is about 30%, and the content of silicon dioxide is generally about 20%. This unique combination of ingredients gives AZS bricks excellent performance. From the production process, it is a white solid formed by melting pure alumina powder and zircon sand containing about 65% zirconium oxide and 34% silicon dioxide in an electric furnace at a high temperature of 1800-1900℃ and then injecting it into a mold for cooling. Its petrographic structure consists of the eutectoid of corundum and zirconite and the glass phase. From the perspective of facies, it is the eutectoid of corundum phase and zirconite phase, and the glass phase is filled between their crystals. In the manufacturing process of fused-cast bricks, selected zircon sand and industrial alumina powder are mixed in a ratio of 1:1, and a small amount of Na₂O (added in the form of sodium carbonate) and B₂O₃ (added in the form of boric acid or borax) flux are added. After mixing evenly, it is melted and cast. On this basis, if partially desiliconized zircon sand is used as raw material, fused-cast bricks containing 36%-41% ZrO₂ can also be obtained. Depending on the content of zirconium oxide, the common ones are No. 33 fused-cast zirconium corundum brick (AZS-33), No. 36 fused-cast zirconium corundum brick (AZS-36), and No. 41 fused-cast zirconium corundum brick (AZS-41).

Application fields of AZS bricks

Glass industry

In the field of glass manufacturing, AZS bricks are the key materials for tank kilns. The bottom, wall, upper structure and feed channel of the glass kiln are eroded and corroded by high-temperature glass liquid for a long time. With its excellent high temperature and corrosion resistance, AZS bricks can effectively resist these erosions, ensure the normal operation of high-temperature kilns, and thus improve glass quality and production efficiency. For example, in float glass production, AZS bricks are widely used in key parts of tank kilns, providing a stable foundation for the continuous production of glass. Different types of AZS bricks have different application scenarios in glass kilns. AZS-33 is mainly used for relatively low temperature and less corrosive working ends, supply channels and other parts; AZS-36 is suitable for parts with high corrosion resistance and temperature requirements, such as side walls, pavements, etc.; AZS-41 is especially suitable for parts with severe corrosion in glass melting furnaces, such as the bottom, dam blocks, corners, etc., and can also be used in side walls.

Metallurgical industry

In the metallurgical industry, AZS bricks are often used to build the lining of degassing ladle, stainless steel ladle, rolling ladle, etc. During the steel smelting process, the ladle needs to withstand the erosion of high-temperature molten steel and the wear of slag. The excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance of AZS bricks can effectively reduce the wear of the furnace slag in the ladle on the furnace wall and the erosion of molten steel, thereby extending the service life of the ladle. This not only reduces production costs, but also improves production safety and stability.

Ceramic industry

During the ceramic firing process, the ceramic firing furnace needs to operate stably for a long time under high temperature environment. AZS bricks can be used in the key parts of the ceramic firing furnace to resist high temperature erosion and provide a stable working environment for ceramic firing. It can withstand temperature changes and chemical erosion during high-temperature firing to ensure the quality and firing effect of ceramic products.

Advantages of AZS Bricks

High Refractoriness

AZS bricks have a refractory temperature of over 1790℃, and are classified as advanced refractory materials. This allows it to maintain stable physical and chemical properties for a long time in high-temperature industrial environments, and will not soften, deform or melt due to high temperatures.

High load softening temperature

Its load softening temperature is generally above 1550-1650℃. This means that under a certain weight, AZS bricks can still maintain good shape and structural stability in a high-temperature environment, and will not easily deform or collapse. In glass kilns, AZS bricks need to bear the weight of high-temperature glass liquid, and the high load softening temperature ensures that it can do this job.

Good thermal shock resistance

In industrial production, kilns often experience temperature changes such as heating and cooling. AZS bricks have good thermal shock resistance and can withstand rapid changes in temperature without cracking or damage. During the opening and closing of the glass furnace, the temperature changes greatly. The thermal shock resistance of AZS bricks ensures its reliability in these processes.

Excellent chemical corrosion resistance

AZS bricks have good resistance to acidic or alkaline slag, molten metal corrosion, oxidation and reduction reactions, and with the increase of AL₂O₃ content and the decrease of harmful impurities, its chemical corrosion resistance will be further enhanced. In the metallurgical industry, slag and molten steel are highly corrosive. The chemical corrosion resistance of AZS bricks enables them to be used for a long time in such harsh environments.

Although AZS bricks have many advantages, their unit price is relatively high. Therefore, when choosing to use them, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the overall situation of the kiln and the budget, and seek ways to reduce costs and increase efficiency while ensuring the stability of the kiln. With the continuous advancement of science and technology, it is believed that the performance of AZS bricks will continue to improve in the future, and the application field will be further expanded.
